Sam Usman Jr, our CEO and original force behind Pro Gro, started his journey back in his high school years in East Lansing, Michigan, and has since continued to pursue his passion for cannabis.

After college and a stint in corporate America, Sam left traditional business behind in 2009, investing in the Colorado cannabis industry.

This was only the beginning. He then returned back home, bringing his passion for the industry with him. Michigan, where Sam knew and understood the community, became the perfect place for the inception of our brand. Sam was also among the pioneers who were active advocates of early legislature that laid the groundwork to provide the state with safe, quality cannabis on a commercial level.

The laws, while imperfect, paved the path for an open cannabis market.

Following the passage of the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act in 2008, the story of Pro Gro actually began as a small caregiver project (with a 72-plant limit). Sam worked tirelessly, dedicating his efforts to creating a precisely controlled environment, and as a result, the quality of his product was unmatched. As time passed—the plant count grew—and the expertise increased.

The defining principles of Pro Gro mirror our journey – resilience and dedication to quality. From our initial stages as Pure Options, a renaming was required to steer away from conflicts with competitors. Thus, Pro Gro (aptly named after Sam acquired a bowling alley called ‘Pro Bowl’) inherited its significant name. This name has since grown to represent a brand that shines as a beacon of unparalleled quality in the entire state.

Today, our brand stands as a dominant presence in the Michigan cannabis industry, and its influence can be seen clearly in the expansion into six stores throughout the state. We’re not only recognized for our high-quality cannabis but also for raising the industry’s standards.
